I buy a ton of tools to take parts out of a car i haven't found, to put it into one that doesn't work properly.

Oh... Its official. Rational thought has definitely gone out the window.

Now that i know that i have to go and find the parts myself, i blow $100 on shit that i probably don't need.

Jimmy can't find the parts

Although initially fairly confident, jimmy hasn't been able to find the emissions parts for an 85 Trans Am in his local junkyard, He wants me to pick up the car and wait until I have the parts.

I would buy them all new but they are expensive, an Air diverter valve alone is about $300. I need to find a parts car and rip out what I need.

The parts required can likely be found on any Chevy V8 305 Carburetted engine but it's a matter of finding one.

The 82-86 Trans AM has an identical A.I.R system to mine as do Camaro's of the same period and I'd seen one that might work but I was only really looking at its 15 inch rims.

I need to help Jimmy and get these parts or I'll have to tow it back.

Towing KITT to Jimmys

I towed KITT to Jimmy's yesterday using a UHaul Auto Transport.

I'd highly recommend this as it was fairly easy to use. It cost me about $114.

You can pay the guys $20 to attach the car to the chains and stuff. I watched them carefully so i will be able to do it myself next time :-)

New Mechanic Found

I think i have found someone who can work on my car.

Jimmy from Pacific Auto Service in Silverlake is about 20 miles away and is a 5-star reviewed mechanic. A reviewer also mentioned that he worked on his 70's trans-am, so this might be a runner.

KITT gets turned away

As nice as the guys were at Morris Automotive, they said that KITT needed too much work. And shortly after i dropped it down to them they asked me to pick it back up. I wasn't even home.

Basically, it needs so much work that as a small shop they just would not be able to spend the time on it, and it would be cost prohibitive for me.

They re-iterated that the Check Engine light was not working and that my dash was aftermarket and was going to be very tricky to take out.

So in order to pass Smog, I've probably also going to have to put back in the old dash (which incidentally was in the trunk). In order to debug the check engine light it probably needs to come out anyway - so might aswell.

Next mission is to find someone who will do all of this work.

Finding someone to add the smog gear

I called around a ton pof places in Santa Monica today and none of them would work on cars older than 95.

The only place that i could find was Morris Automotive, who said that they would take a look at it.

I'm going to bring it down there and see what happens.

Passing CA Smog is going to be a challenge

I've actually already started an Asana project to make sure that i cover everything that needs to be done to the car, but i've already got a fairly large issue that needs to be resolved. The car does not have any emissions equipment installed and i'm going to need that if i want to drive it on California roads.

There are so many missing pieces that its fairly daunting.

Pretty much everything that you can see in this diagram is missing, that's about 30 parts.

I'm also missing the

Stock Air Cleaner
Stock Air Duct
Stock Valve Covers
Catalytic Converter

When i brought it to the Smog Center for a pre-test, they said that i had to get all of that stuff added and then come back.

Here is a link to GM Parts East site where i realized what i have got ahead of me.

First clean

Once i got back from Ireland i couldn't leave it alone so i went out and gave it a bit of a clean.

Its think it looks much much better.

Unfortunately i am completely incapable of getting the front hub caps back on, i suppose that doesn't bode well for the rest of the restoration...

It's arrived :-)

I was actually in Ireland when it came but Dmitry drove it and parked it for me, it looks pretty good for a 31 year old car!

The front hub caps had to be popped off for transport :-)
